“Our Challenges Are Big” – Dr. William Conteh Speaks
“Change, as re-echoed by President Koroma, is the focus of all at the secretariat of the 50th Anniversary,” words of Dr. William Conteh, Chairman 50th Anniversary Secretariat.
In weeks past, Sierra Leoneans have had a busy time questioning the budget submitted by officials of the 50th anniversary secretariat to Sierra Leone’s government.
To them, it sounds misusing spending USD 25 million just on our 50th anniversary celebration.
But to the strategists (Office of the President, Steering Committee, National Executive Chairman and the Secretariat of 50th anniversary), the budget submitted meets requirements that include rehabilitation of the Presidential Lounge, terminal and all roads leading to the Sierra Leone International airport.
It is also told that the celebration, as was proclaimed by President Koroma, should be a year long and must reflect national interests and standards.
To this, rests the stance of Dr. William Conteh, who honestly, asserts using the 50th anniversary vision as a spring board to the rebuilding of a new and developed Sierra Leone.
Dr. Conteh said that the secretariat of the 50th anniversary in its vision respectfully submitted a projected financial plan of USD 25 million on the grounds illustrating all out contributions in the improvement of Sierra Leone come the end of the year long anniversary celebrations.
The amount, he said, makes provision for financial support to organizations, communities and associations with positive and constructive ideas.
“Of course” he said, “Lungi Airport is prominent in our agenda. We want Sierra Leone’s 50th birthday to bring a laurel to the airport and its surroundings.”
He revealed how the airport’s Presidential Lounge and terminal have been identified for renovation.
It was also disclosed that the deplorable state of roads leading to and from the airport will be repaired to a higher standard.
“You know what, it is my imagination to see unborn children inherit legacies left them by their forefathers and fathers,” Dr. Conteh accentuated.
“And to do so, we should all work together and not tittle-tattle another at all. May I say to Sierra Leoneans that two institutions donated monies to the 50th anniversary secretariat: a Chinese company ‘Kingho’ USD 600,000 and African Minerals USD 1 million,” he continued.
Even though the idea to celebrate Sierra Leone’s independence seemed welcoming, questions as to the fabulous and flamboyant use of USD 25 million pondered minds – some say it makes nonsense of a levelheaded desirable prediction.
But according to Dr. Conteh, the amount forwarded presumably takes the place of a restaurant ‘menu;’ showing what is there to eat, but which the buyer is able to buy.
“Don’t underrate predictions of the 50th anniversary secretariat, it is forward looking and might help rebuild Sierra Leone,” he said.
