Subscribers embrace communication freedom – The mobile telecommunication company for the year 2010, airtel has applauded AWOL (All Works of Life) for recognizing the company as the best mobile service operator in the country. The trophy was received by the Managing Director of airtel, RVS Bhullar at the prestigious Family kingdom west of Freetown on the 26th December 2010. The award ceremony was highly attended by high profile figures in the country.

Upon receiving the award, the company MD stated that, the brand in 2010 has made tremendous strides in the market in order to maintain its leadership. “2010 has been a phenomenal year with our business getting stronger and stronger as we continue to provide quality and affordable service for our numerous customers”, he further emphasized.

The change from Zain to airtel in November serves as a demonstration that the company is determined to do great business in Sierra Leone. Bharti airtel, the parent body is the 5th largest mobile operator in the world. The company has decided to invest in this country because Sierra Leone has a huge potential that has not yet been explored.

In a life full of challenges, airtel is the only brand that delivers relevant and innovative solutions which help the consumers overcome their daily challenges by providing them with the freedom to do what they want to do.

In 2011, airtel’s MD, RVS Bhullar assured subscribers about the company’s determination in providing affordable tariff in the country. “It is our vision to be the most loved brand in the daily lives of all African people by 2015”, he further said.

Airtel was rated as the best mobile company in the country as a result of its contribution to National development, high quality network service, wide coverage, e-commerce service in the form of airtel money (formerly ZAP), and quality customer service relation and so on.

In its strive to fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility; the company over the years have undertaken several developmental initiatives in the country.

Early 2010, the company contributed immensely in giving 8 Sierra Leonean students the opportunity to interact with colleagues from other countries. This was manifested in the ‘Zain Africa Challenge’ held in Uganda in which the company donated $20, 000, worth of technical equipment to Njala University and the University of Sierra Leone, from their prize money later in the year. The students each earned $1000 for participating.

In February 2010, the company sponsored the IMC Media Awards, in which journalists in the country were recognized for their outstanding contribution in the print and electronic media.

In April, airtel sponsored the live performance of the Senegalese American super star, Akon at the National Stadium in partnership with AWOL.

July 2010, airtel sponsored 5 subscribers to watch the World Cup finals live in South Africa as Very Important Personalities.

The company initiated a massive price reduction (on-net & off-net) and this was also a welcomed by the subscribers. The company also took the lead in donating to mud slide victims of Owen Street, Mountain Cut Freetown. This was followed by another donation to the various mosques in the country during the Ramadan period in September2010. The company also undertook its ‘Build Our Nation’ project in September in which learning materials were donated to certain schools in Freetown and in the Provinces.

Airtel, in partnership with the National Tourism Board facilitated the ‘Beach Cleaning Project’ so as to provide healthy environment for the people and tourists coming to Sierra Leone.

Airtel also staged its ‘Corporate Football Gala’ at the Hockey Pitch, Wilberforce west of Freetown in which 12 corporate institutions participated. In November 2010, the company sponsored WILSA Football Tournament at the Wilberforce village.

To welcome the new airtel brand in Sierra Leone, the company visited two hospitals in the western area and donated brand new Nokiax2 phones plus Le500, 000 to each babies born on the 19th November when the new airtel brand was officially launched in Sierra Leone.

To witness the end of year, the company sponsored four (4) airtel subscribers and two (2) journalists to watch the MTV Africa Music Awards in Lagos, Nigeria. In December, donations were made to the Raining Season Orphanage kids on Christmas day during a party held for them.

These and many more are just some of the activities undertaken by the company which led to them being voted as best telecoms company for 2010. “Airtel has the highest number of subscribers in the country. That is why the company is always in the lead in GST payment.

Airtel is the only mobile telecommunication company in Sierra Leone with high quality network coverage that reaches the four corners of the country”, said Kelvin Kellie, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications.
