Mission accomplished – Usman Boie Kamara turns Freetown green!
Less than three months to the SLPP convention, Usman Boie Kamara brought Freetown to a standstill in shades of green. Saturday, 18th December was UBK’s official declaration in the Western Area of his candidature for the SLPP flagbearership. As early as 6:00 am supporters started converging in three locations in the country’s capital; the Brima Attouga Stadium in Cline Town, Parade Grounds, Circular Road and the St. John roundabout in the West of Freetown, to start “a journey of a thousand miles.” (Photo:
The crowds moved with non-stop music, dancing and chanting of slogans in support of UBK, a man who stands for a better Sierra Leone. The procession from all three locations marched peacefully through the streets of Freetown in unity to assemble at the PZ roundabout and then proceeded to the SLPP headquarters with UBK and his wife leading in the forefront.
On arrival at the party office, estimations of over 15,000 people from all walks of life and age groups were in attendance to show their support for the man whom they believe is capable to lead the SLPP and Sierra Leone.
UBK and his wife entered the jam packed hall to a thunderous applause lasting almost five minutes. The organisers ensured that the programme was aired live on both SLBC TV and other radio stations across the country for those not able to attend or make it to the surrounding vicinities of the official programme. Also, projection screens were mounted at the SLPP canteen and other parts of the building for those who did not manage to make it into the main hall.
The programme was officially called to order by the chairman of the day Reverend Abraham Baba Sesay. Delegates and speakers from all the twelve districts in the country made statements conveying messages from their constituents as they endorse UBK’s candidacy as a blessing for the SLPP and Sierra Leone. Various speakers outlined his kindness, sacrifices, honesty, integrity and contributions towards the success of the SLPP and mainly to people from deprived communities. “Indeed UBK is the only one among the 23 aspirants who can return the party to State House,” stated a delegate from Kenema.
During UBK’s 20 minute keynote speech, he outlined his reasons for entering politics which was centered upon his selflessness and patriotism. He encouraged all Sierra Leoneans to come together and change things for the better; through hard work and honesty. Further, he talked on strategy and policy focusing on his commitment to provide people with life skills through training and education, particularly for the youthful population. He believes that developing and enhancing the human resource capital of the country will make citizens not only self reliant but, major contributors to the development of family, community and country. He further highlighted the ongoing antagonism and intimidation so synonymous with the APC as recently demonstrated in Kono and Marbella. His recent prevention from being allowed into Kono to help his party’s campaign for the Kono district Chairman By-election is one clear example on how far the ruling APC government is ready to deny peaceful citizens their God given human rights. The repression of much loved musical artists who once were able to sing freely under the SLPP without fear, are no longer allowed in doing so. He also touched on the trampling of the civic rights of the residents of Wilkinson Road and Congo Cross in the name of “so called” development. On the overall, his message centered on a call to unity of a nation of “One country, One People” and a vision for Sierra Leone that will see a nation of smiling people – confident about their future and that of their children.
Mrs Isata Boie Kamara as graceful as ever followed UBK’s speech with a memorable vote of thanks; embracing all the women of Sierra Leone, thanking the organisers of the programme, guests, supporters and admirers of a man who is not only her husband but one she believes to always mean well for Sierra Leone. Above all, she expressed a special thank you to the President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma and entourage for joining in the procession though for a short period. Most importantly, she sent a special thank you to those who provided security including the Sierra Leone Police Force for demonstrating professionalism in crowd control and protecting lives and property on the day. She hoped that, this is the mark of unity to see Sierra Leoneans coming together to build a brighter and better future for our beloved country.
The chairman concluded that the only obstacle now to SLPP winning the 2012 Election is the SLPP delegates. Therefore he warned all delegates to learn from the past and elect a capable aspirant in Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara who stands the best chance in bringing victory to the SLPP in 2012.
