Police release 4 journalists on bail

FreetownThe Criminal Investigations Department in Freetown last night released on bail four independent newspaper journalists whose arrests were ordered by the new Minister of Lands, Allieu Pat Sowe. They are to report to the police today.

The President of SLAJ, Umaru Fofana stood as surety for the four who are Abdul Rahman Kamara of Torchlight, Razrok Wurie of Satellite, Sheik Unisa Thoronka of Global Times and Alfred Koroma of African Champion. They were investigating an apparent fraud as contained in an audit report of funds provided to the Lands Ministry by the Investment Climate Facility.

Earlier in the day three of the journalists were temporarily released but were later called in by the police to obtain statement from them before being granted bail.

SLAJ condemns the arrests of the journalists who were investigating an issue of national importance and a public interest. We hope the arrests will not undermine the investigation by the journalists into the apparent disappearance of money meant for the lands ministry as contained in said audit report.
