Gyan dares Drogba & Eto’o for CAF Award

Sunderland’s Asmoah Gyan (in photo) has reiterated to journalists in the UK that despite African big names in his way to win this year CAF Award his credentials for the top individual price in African football will speak for itself. The winner will be revealed at an award Gala in the Egyptian capital Cairo on December 20.

The Ghanaian striker is one of three Black Stars players to make the shortlist alongside Dede Ayew of Olympique Marseille and Kevin-Prince Boateng, the AC Milan midfielder who made the switch from ex-German youth international to full blown Ghanaian international in time for the world cup in South Africa.

Gyan leading his Ghanaian trio will face stiff competition from some of the continent’s most renowned players especially Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o Fill and the Ivorian Didier Drogba who was top scorer in the English Premier League heading into the World Cup.

“I have done very well this year at club level, at the Nations Cup and the world cup too,” Gyan says. “Drogba has been my inspiration. He spoke to me when I was heavily criticised during the 2008 Nations Cup and told me to keep going.

“Eto’o is a legend but this year has been my year and even they would agree. I am nowhere near them overall and want to be like them one day but this year; I have played well to deserve the title.”

No Ghanaian has won the converted individual prize since Abedi Pele completed a trio of wins in 1993.
