Robbers snatch N50M from Delta Govt House Chief Accountant

ASABA—A gang of armed robbers operating on motor cycles, yesterday, snatched over N50 million from the Chief Accountant of the Delta State Government House, Asaba, at gun point.

The Chief Accountant, Mr. Michael Oghene, was ambushed on his way back to Government House, after cashing the money in one of the commercial banks along Nnebisi Road.

Ironically, the robbery incident took place by Inter-Bau Roundabout, which is only a few meters away from the State police command headquarters at about 11am.

Eyewitness told Vanguard, that the robbers caused stampede during the operation, which lasted about eight minutes, as they shot sporadically to scare away people.  Some members of the public, who usually gather to watch the big television screen positioned close to the place had to run for their lives.

The Chief Accountant, had gone to the bank with a Peugeot car bearing registration number DTGH 736, but was stopped at gun point as soon as he approached the roundabout and forcefully took away  Ghana-Must-Go bags from the booth containing the money.

It was not immediately ascertained whether the Chief Accountant was hurt but Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Sunny Ogefere, said “police are already investigating, but I must tell you that one of the robbers has been arrested and some of the money recovered.”
