Former Bursar of SLMB arraigned for corruption

Former Bursar of Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood Secondary School (SLMB) Makeni, was on Thursday 4th November 2010 arraigned in the High Court in Makeni for various offences under the Anti-Corruption Act 2008.

The Anti-Corruption Commission arraigned Mr. Alpha Turay on sixty five (65) count charges of misappropriation of Public Funds contrary  to Section 36 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 12 of 2008.

It is  alleged that the accused person being the Bursar of SLMB and being a Public Officer,  misappropriated Public Funds, amounting to over forty nine million Leones (Le49,000,000) collected by him as school fees by means of forged receipts purporting to be proof of the use of the said sum for the purchase of school materials on behalf of SLMB from fictitious enterprises.

The Accused pleaded not guilty on all counts. He was refused bail by Justice Sam Margai and remanded at the Makeni State Prisons. The  matter was adjourned to Tuesday 9th November 2010.

The State is represented by Calvin Mantsebo and Reginald Fynn while the accused is represented by Abu Fornah Esq.

This is the first time Ant-Corruption Commission case is tried in the provinces. The Commission does not only seek to prosecute corrupt individuals but also ensure that justice is seen to be done.
