School Buses from Morgan Heritage
The Mayor of Freetown City Council Herbert Williams at a press briefing held at the British Council hall on Monday 25th told a battery of journalists that the proceeds from the Morgan Heritage concert scheduled for December 28-29 will be used to purchase school buses in order to bring a durable solution to the problem of transportation for school going children in the municipality.
In his concept overview, the city father said he was contacted by a group of people to partner with the Freetown City Council to host the sensational reggae ace band the Morgan Heritage Family.
“After serious consideration by the council, the council consented to take the venture due to the findings about the Morgan Heritage”, Mayor charged and disclosed that “research fostered by the Freetown City Council revealed that the Morgan family traced their roots to Sierra Leone and because their songs are morally correct and upright, this is the more reason for the Council’s choice.”
The Mayor also informed all that the amount of money needed to stage such a concert is over Two Hundred Million Dollars as it stands indisputable that Council cannot afford such an amount hence partnering with fifty other business companies with Africell being the leading company that has already chipped in the sum of a Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollar in kind.
The Mayor further disclosed Council’s intention to cater for a chartered flight that will jet the Morgan Family to the Lungi International Airport. Also arrangements to dedicate a plot of land to the Morgan Heritage is on course.
Making a statement at this all important briefing, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation Osmond Hancile noted that the aim of his Ministry is to promote the growth of transportation. Two hundred thousand passengers normally jet into Lungi Airport annually but the homecoming of the Heritage family will attract the same two hundred thousand and as a result the ministry will be improving the gateway of the country, improve the security of the port and upgrade the runway, the minister revealed
Hassan Mansaray the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture noted that his Ministry’s aim is to promote local tourism and that the coming of the Heritage Family will spruce up the sprite of the music into the country’s young ones.
Officially launching the Morgan Heritage concert, the Minister of Information and Communication I.B. Kargbo stated that the Government is very satisfied that the Municipality is governed by people with focus. The Minister advised all not to interfere with an idea that has been structured that is bound to pay dividend to the nation.
However, there are some schools of thought that holds the view that the Council has misplaced their priority as purchasing buses still does not address the problem of lateness of pupils to school. They pointed out that these buses would still be available and pupils still turn out late for school because school going children in the municipality have to wake up at around four to five early morning to fetch water before preparing for school and that the distance from the residence to the point were the water is fetched is a great distance. They call on the Council to consider the option of street taps instead of buses.
Another school of thought brings to memory the 1972 incident when all local government activities were banned by the late Siaka Stevens as a result of misappropriations and corruption of government funds which was then replaced with a Committee of Management in1972. This set of pundits expressed their dissatisfaction over the Le 91 million spent on just clearing of the debris of the dilapidated old City Hall with nothing currently going on in that particular location. Another issue raised by this set of people is the deliberate omission of the Council in the annual audit report prepared by the Audit Service Commission which they described as a serious cause for concern.
It is also strongly believed that the Council will make it if and only robust security measures are put in place as a famous businessman by the name of Femi Ebron singlehandedly brought in Joseph Hills another popular reggae songster into Sierra Leone and realized so much. This medium will be constantly informing our readers about update especially when the event is just a skip to catch.
