Disregard for the press – Zainab Bangura accused

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Zainab Hawa Bangura (in photo) has come under serious accusation of dodging the press. Journalists complain that there are lots of rigmaroles and protocols involved to seeing the Minister for comments on issues of national interest.

According to the schedule for the every Thursday press briefing held at the Ministry of Information, the Minister was supposed to make herself available for the briefing which many Journalists saw as an opportunity to get her own side on various issues but rather disappointingly she was conspicuously absent. According to sources at the Ministry of Information and Communication, Zainab Bangura failed to inform the Ministry that she will not be available for the briefing.

This habit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs is becoming a cause for concern as she is alleged to have also refused to deal with the committee set up by the President to look into allegations heaped on her by the Sierra Leone Gullah Kinship Association. The committee, sources say, has therefore decided to write the report and submit to the President since all efforts to get the Minister to comment were to no avail.

Sierra Leoneans can recall that since she resumed office, the so called iron-lady Minister has failed to comment on very sensitive issues such as that of the two ship loads of rice allegedly sold, Gullah Kinship and the issue of the Liberians refugees and their resettlement packages. Answers to all of these issues remain unanswered.
