Official Launch of the Network of Economic and Development Reporters (NEDER)

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will be officially launching the Network of Development and Economic Reporters (NEDER) on Tuesday, October 19 at the Harry Yansaneh Memorial Hall, 56 Campbell Street in Freetown.

The Network was established in June 2010 after a training session in financial and development reporting in Freetown organized by SLAJ in collaboration with the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), to ensure that economic and development stories on the country are reported widely in the country’s media.

According to the President of SLAJ, Umaru Fofanah, the network was established against the backdrop of a media landscape that is totally devoid of financial and development reporting. “It is against this background of the need to fill the void that the Association sought assistance from its partners to support the training programme for financial and development reporters,” he said.

The President also noted that the establishment of the network is not in anyway an attempt to create rival associations or networks of journalists, but simply as an opportunity for reporters to contribute to the country’s development by making specialized and credible financial and development reports that inform the public about the choices they must make.

In addition to newspaper publications, radio and television broadcasts of stories by the members of the network, plans are also underway for the stories to be posted on the web when the network establishes a website for its operations.

The Network is presently made up of ten members initially selected from various newspapers, radio and television stations in the country for a month-long (two-phase) intensive training in financial and development reporting from a renowned international financial reporter and trainer, Fid Thompson, at the World Bank Country Office in Freetown. Another member was taken on board later on the basis of the interest he displayed in becoming a member.

Other members will later be accepted into the network, and the conditions for membership will be communicated to the public as soon as the official registration of the network with the Registrar General in Freetown is completed. This is expected to be made easier with the official launch of the network scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, 2010.
