IMC disgusted with newspaper headline
The Independent Media Commission noted with disgust the indecent language used as the banner headline of the Nation Newspaper in its Vol.2. No.73 edition of Thursday 14th October 2010 captioned “APC is an ungrateful Asshole”.
The Commission invited the Managing Editor Mr. John Koroma, yesterday 14th September 2010 during its Board Meeting and told him in no uncertain terms that indecent language/materials are strictly prohibited by IMC Media Code of Practice.
The Editor explained that he was just trying to capture the feelings of some of the angry supporters of Haja Afsatu Kabba at the court and used that language (Asshole) as his headline. He however, regretted his mistake and tendered his unreserved apology and promised to do an immediate retraction of the headline.
The Commission instructed him to do the retraction and apologise to the nation for the indecent language he used and fined him the sum of Le250. 000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Leones) as a deterrent to other journalists which he accepted to pay.
The Commission strictly warned him to endeavour to operate within the IMC Act and Media Code of Practice.
The IMC wishes to reiterate that Section 23 of the IMC Media Code of Practice provides that “indecency and pornographic materials are strictly prohibited as they are mainly for titillation and add no value to the News”.
