The Charles Margai We All Know

The Charles Margai We All Know

No doubt, of course, Sierra Leoneans have been used to Charles Margai’s ‘in and out of pond’ political publicity stunt.  (Photo:  Charles Margai)

Way back in 1996, he was among persons short listed for the contest for SLPP leadership.

After losing to Ex-President Kabbah, Charles Margai was seen as losing sight of a party his father and forefathers once headed.

Not much was seen of him. After winning the 1996 elections, the SLPP, while in governance, appointed Charles Margai as a cabinet Minister.

He was in that capacity up until 2001 when he tendered his letter of resignation on grounds of what he says was then President Kabbah ‘disrespectful’ conduct to him.

Before the 2007 elections, Charles Margai traditionally settled with members of the SLPP and was among persons that contested for SLPP leadership.

After his defeat at party convention by Solomon Berewa, Margai went on a campaign of vilification against the SLPP, calling conduct of the election as ‘full of flaws.’

It was against such he was able to bring to birth the Peoples Movement for democratic Change (PMDC).

Having gone through the registration of the PMDC party, Charles Margai called up a party convention where he was voted leader of the party.

He took part in the 2007 elections but lost woefully. The elections which went on a run off between the APC and SLPP saw Charles Margai’s unflinching support for the APC.

In retrospect, and by reflections, Charles Margai, who now tours corners, roads, towns, cities, and villages of Sierra Leone, castigating the APC of corruption, used to be the same man that was compelling voters in the East and South to vote for APC.

Charles Margai, on number of occasions was spotted as saying to voters: “the only man to make this country is President Koroma. If he fails, trust me, I will resign from politics.”

By the above quote, it is but demanding that Charles Margai be made to go by his words and resign from politics.

He must be judged by what he says and made to quit without excuse.

He, who says he will resign if President Koroma did not deliver, has said, President Koroma’s government is corrupt- a shaming shame!

And don’t ask who Charles Margai is.

Far from reaching the Late Karifa Smart (the President that never was), Charles Margai’s history is shaming, rotten and selfish.

Unlike Karifa Smart, Charles Margai never accepts defeat and was always in fight with fellow party members and allies.

To the writer, it is a disgrace to hear Charles Margai thrash about in court with baby boy Mohamed Bangura.

It was told that the aforementioned individuals choose going to court because no one was ready to give in for the other; mismanagement and misuse of authority caused court action.

Just make a quick turn, see what the same man (Charles Margai) embarks on doing; this time, on a campaign of vilification against a party he used hum and chant for – APC is good for Sierra Leone.

No wasting time at all! Charles Margai is no good leader, no good politician and an uncompassionate disrespectful dictator.

Even as time draws near to 2012, conscious electorates have called Charles Margai and his PMDC party as perfected failures.
