Corruption at Local Government – Minister Exposed

An officer of the National Audit Commission, weeks ago, revealed blatant, Local Government Minister’s undue overindulgences in the omission of audit findings of Local Councils in annual report 2007 & 2008 respectively.

Commissioner Mommoh, in an interview, told Donstance Koroma how the omission of audit findings of respective Local Councils in annual audit reports of 2007 & 2008, was due to directives from the Local Government Minister, Amb. Dauda Kamara (in photo).

The interview also brought to light, revelations of Minister Dauda Kamara’s uncalled for commands to officials of the National Audit Service Commission, mandating them omit or not include in audit findings, information bordering on all Local Council institutions nationwide.

The report which explains conducts and annual financial expenses of state institutions, do have legal bindings, compelling all including Local Council departments, submit it overall financial dos and don’ts to national audit officers as called for by law.

That the essence of such audit makes available a fear opinion of Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Commissions etc, on issues explaining financial accounting status.

But in the 2007 & 2008 reports, audit results of city and district councils were omitted and have not been published by the Audit Service Commission for public view.

It has reached desks of this medium that the Local Government Minister, Amb. Dauda Kamara, having no consideration for laws in the good books of this country (Sierra Leone), collected collated audit findings of all the Local Councils and kept same in secret drawers of his Ministerial office.

Several attempts to have the say of the Minister proved vague.

It could be recalled that time and again, the President, uncompromisingly has called of public officials to desist doing things inimical to state progress- zero tolerance on corruption.

By the aforementioned quote, views of individuals say that government and the Anti Corruption Commission must guarantee the establishment of an investigation to show reasons leading to the undue violations of rules as stated in laws of this country.

It must be noted that the attitude of transparency as reiterated by officials of the ruling APC seemed not real at all.

Sierra Leone’s currency notes, months past, went under the process of resizing by government.

The old ones were replaced and taken out of use.

The amount and full amount of notes resized has not been told and would be never told.

To the international observers, it is one among the many reasons Sierra Leone falls short in ratings of the Mo Ibrahim index.

It would amaze all that Sierra Leone was rated lowest in education, health and welfare.

The Local Government Minister is said to be having field day with Mayors and Town Council Chairmen, manipulating and creating strategies that will enable them chop tax payer’s monies.
