Ahead of Leone Stars clash…’Schillo’ in line for CAF award

Bafana Bafana star midfielder Steven Pienaar ahead of his national side’s second encounter in the ongoing Africa nations Cup qualifiers has been nominated for CAF’s Player of the Year award.

‘Schillo’, the Everton midfielder who was in sublime form in Bafana’s last match, a 2-0 victory over Niger, is among 17 African stars vying for the award.

Four Ghanaians, Africa’s best team during the Fifa World Cup in June after reaching the quarterfinals, and four Ivoirians, make the shortlist.

Surprisingly, Michael Essien makes the cut despite being out for most of last season due to injury. The Chelsea midfielder played no part in the World Cup and earlier this year Ghana had to do without him at the Africa Cup of Nations, but he is in the list.

According to reports the list will be cut down to three later this year.

Steven Pienaar (Everton/South Africa)
Madjid Bougherra (Rangers/Algeria)
Samuel Eto’o (Inter Milan/Cameroon)
Kolo Habib Touré (Manchester City/Ivory Coast)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea/Ivory Coast)
Solomon Kalou (Chelsea/Ivory Coast)
Gervinho (Lille/Ivory Coast)
Mohamed Zidan (Dortmund/Egypt)

Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal/Morocco)
Victor Nsofor Obinna (Inter Milan, on loan to West Ham/Nigeria)
