In celebration of International Peace Day, British Council tackles youth violence in Freetown

As the world celebrates International Peace Day on 21 September British Council is organising a-three day stakeholder workshop at the British Council auditorium in Freetown from the 21-23 September 2010. The workshops are a culmination of similar ones held in Bo, Kenema and Makeni as part of efforts to stem the tide of violence permeating the Sierra Leone society especially through young people.

The Director of British Council in Freetown, Louisa Waddingham said “As a cultural relations organisation, British Council aims to promote co-existence, co-operation, mutual respect and understanding. We are proud to organise this workshop to coincide with an important global milestone aimed at reminding us all that we have a duty to promote peace. The workshop will make an important contribution towards Sierra Leone’s peace and stability. We look forward to everyone attending the workshop playing their part”.

Over the past year, British Council has been applying its experience in cultural relations to bring together the stakeholders of students who have been affected by the escalating tide of violence at schools and in the community. This year’s workshop will draw participants from all sections of the city including school pupils, university students, the Military, the Police, Prisons Service, Judiciary, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare, religious leaders, traditional rulers and Civil Society.

The workshop will be highly interactive and participatory, providing a learning and discursive platform on issues of conflict, violence and peace. It is expected to give participants practical strategies to manage conflict and prevent violence in their schools and communities.

The British Council is a cultural relations organisation that brings people together across cultures, communities and countries to build trust and understanding and to foster co-operation that contributes to safer societies. Its policy is to work with everyone equally, irrespective of age, race, gender, ability and religious beliefs.
