ACC Called to Probe Kenema Gov’t Hospital

Some officials on the Board of the Kenema Government Hospital have called on the Anti Corruption Commission to intervene in corrupt matters bordering on the welfare of patients at the hospital with allegations that a cross section of the Hospital Board has taken to swindling medical materials and drugs meant for patients at the hospital, which they sell to private media practitioners.

According to a member of the Kenema Government Hospital Board, who asked not to be named, some Board members have formed a cabal that is engaged in the sales of medical supplies and equipment which they said has led to untold deprivation of patients who are in dire need of standard treatment.

“NGOs, UN agencies and other corporate bodies donate a lot of drugs and medical supplies to the hospital but we don’t end up seeing them in use” the concerned Board member revealed to Sierra Express Media’s Kenema correspondent.

Nurses working at the children’s ward tell a sad story saying that most times, patients admitted in the ward go without medicines. “Pregnant women are the most affected as they end up loosing their lives because of essential drugs which was supplied but not utilised for their benefit as it is sold on the streets.

However, reports further reveal that the children’s ward is without a single medicine which is causing problems for lactating mothers and their infants. The operational laboratory is also not operating anymore, with patients being sent to Bo to do even minor surgical operations.

The growing concern amongst residents of Kenema Township is that a few individuals have held the health of the entire people of the district to ransom, concerned residents of the city have referred to the situation as intolerable.

“We want the Anti-Corruption Commission here to dig into these nefarious acts and bring the culprits to book,” one person said.

Attempts to contact the Kenema Government Hospital board has failed as they refused to talk to the press.
