Clemente takes over Cameroon job
Javier Clemente, former coach for Spain, has been named as the new coach of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions. (Javier Clemente [in photo] has also coaches Spain and Serbia)
The 60-year-old takes over from Paul Le Guen, who stepped down after Cameroon lost all of their group matches at the World Cup.
Clemente was in charge of Spain from 1992 to 1998 and also had a spell in charge of Serbia in 2006-2007.
He will be assisted by two former Cameroon internationals, François Omam-Biyik and Jacques Songo’o.
There was no mention of the duration of the deal in a statement on behalf of Cameroon’s Sports Minister Michel Zoah.
An official of the Cameroon Football Federation FECAFOOT told BBC Sport, the Spaniard will arrive in the country next week to sign a contract.
Clemente, who has coached several clubs, including Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol, Atletico Madrid, Betis in Spain’s La Liga and Marseille in the French Ligue 1, was unable to save Spanish side Valladolid from the drop last season after arriving only weeks before the end of the campaign.
