Windfall: Business Support for Sierra Leoneans from London

African Foundation for Development (AFFORD), working in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialised agency for the United Nations, are to provide business support for about 400 existing businesses in Sierra Leone, AFFORD Operations Manager, Thelma Williams has confirmed.

The project known as RemitPlus focuses and creates strong and tangible links between remittances, enterprise development, investment and personal savings – and Sierra Leoneans stand to benefit immensely by getting free business support and better financial guidance.

“This is a big time jackpot that is knocking at the door steps of business people in Sierra Leone,” observed a financial expert who believes the RemitPlus Project could be a major boost to business people in Sierra Leone.

Next Friday in London, the organisation will be hosting Sierra Leoneans in what Williams described as ‘an information evening’ in which His Excellency Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Edward Mohamed Turay has consented to serve as Guest Speaker at the ceremony.

The aim of the meeting is to enlighten people especially Sierra Leoneans sending money to their country.

Last week, a team from the organization met with officials of the Sierra Leone High Commission in the United Kingdom at the mission’s 41 Eagle Street office, to explain the project.

In addition to this, AFFORD will seize the opportunity to encourage Sierra Leoneans to invest in 50 new businesses in the country as they also offers free financial advice to senders of remittances to Sierra Leone.

“We don’t specify which business you should invest in, we only give guidance and training for you to do your business better,” Thelma confirms.

AFFORD last month organised a financial training workshop in collaboration with INASLA – a Sierra Leone based organisation in the UK, where they presented the development work that they are doing in Sierra Leone, according to Williams.

AFFORD is also working in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialised agency for the United Nations.
