Sierra Leone Head of Chancery to Libya bids farewell
The outgoing Sierra Leone Head of Chancery to Libya, Mr. Sahid Unis Kamara on August 6th, 2010 bid farewell to members of the Sierra Leone Community in Tripoli at a ceremony organized in his honour by the Sierra Leone Youth in Libya.
Declaring the ceremony opened, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Mohamed Kamara welcomed everybody and said the Head of Chancery deserved to be honoured for his outstanding service to not only the Government of Sierra Leone but also to members of the Sierra Leone Community in Libya.
‘That is why’, he said, ‘we the youth in collaboration with the entire Sierra Leone Community thought it wise to organize this occasion to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to a man who for the past seven years had literally shouldered the burden of so many Sierra Leoneans and had gone out of his way to ensure their wellbeing.’
In his keynote address, Mr. Sheriff Bah, a prominent member of the Sierra Leone Community who spoke on the theme: ‘Service to One’s Nation’ highlighted our civic duties as enshrined in the National Pledge of our nation. We Sierra Leoneans, he said, are very conscious of our rights but when it comes to our responsibilities, we often shy away and tend to pass on the burden to Government.
‘Rights and responsibilities must go hand-in-hand in our service to our nation’. He commended the outgoing Head of Chancery’s unselfish service in rescuing so many stranded Sierra Leoneans – be it in the Sahara Desert, in Libyan prisons, jobless, homeless – as true service to one’s nation. He appealed to Sierra Leoneans to be grateful to such a man.
‘And judging by the crowd here’, he said, ‘it is very clear that we are indeed grateful.’
Mr. Bah thanked the outgoing Head of Chancery and his wife, Madam Salamatu Kamara and encouraged the couple to continue to be of true service to their nation wherever they may be.
Various other speakers also paid tributes to the outgoing Head of Chancery and prominent among them were Mr. Mohamed Kamara (Interim Chairman of the Sierra Leone Community), Pastor Joseph Peters and Madam Mabinty Sabha (Women’s Wing). Madam Adeza Amadou presented a gift on behalf of the Sierra Leone Community.
In his Farewell Speech, the outgoing Head of Chancery said he was overwhelmed by the huge turnout and the various tributes which he said are all indicative of his service to his nation and people. He thanked the various speakers whom he said had already delivered his report card at the end of his tour of duty on his behalf and therefore there was nothing left to be said.
The outgoing Head of Chancery however said he was proud of Sierra Leoneans in Libya for being law-abiding adding that throughout his seven-year tour of duty in Libya, the only crimes Sierra Leoneans had committed are petty immigration offences. He appealed to all Sierra Leoneans to continue to be law-abiding, and also asked for forgiveness for any wrong committed on his part.
‘I am not a perfect being’, he said. ‘In the conduct of my duties, I might have knowingly or unknowingly offended some people. To such people, I humbly ask for your forgiveness.’
He promised to continue to work harder in his service to his nation and thanked his wife Madam Salamatu Kamara for being by his side and with whom he shares the praises. He also thanked Sierra Leoneans for their support and other nationals for attending the occasion.
Special Muslim and Christian Prayers were offered for the outgoing Head of Chancery and his family.
