SLBC interim management team takes giant steps
Barely a month in office, the interim management team appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation has been bracing up for the challenge to radically develop the national broadcaster in what they team referred to as a “transitional system to contribute towards the development of the mass communication sector” ahead of the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
One major stride, according to inside sources at the SLBC, was to ensure that staff of the Cabenda, formerly UN Radio and New England, what used to be known as SLBS are successfully merged into a single entity at New England.
Following the merger, team worked out modalities to establish a Human Resource Department. This department has now put in place a modern filling system, taking care of data of employees and other essential documents, report states.
“For the first time in the history of broadcasting, the interim team introduced a Medical Retainer Scheme under which all employees would have access to a medical doctor whenever they fall ill” a senior staff member confided in Sierra Express Media.
The team has also signed an MOU with Africell to facilitate communication for workers especially for reporters in the region who now have easy and less costly means of channeling their reports on twenty-four hours basis.
In addition to structural improvement at the new SLBC, the interim management has integrated new programmes into existing ones and expanded the traditional boundary of broadcasting as the new SLBC now embark on not just news reporting but also mobilizing and sensitizing listeners and viewers alike on issues of national concern.
“The interim management is working out a collaborative relationship with other Broadcasters in the African region so as to broaden its scope,” a senior member of the team intimated.
To implement policies of the corporation several committees have been formed including a committee on policy, on programme, etc.
