50th Anniversary team consults with the north

Sierra Leone’s 50th Independence Anniversary Committee headed by Dr. Williams Conteh, on Thursday, 29th July concluded their Northern Region tour to raise awareness on the country’s golden jubilee celebration next year.

The tour which started in Kabala in the Koinadugu district ended in the regional head quarters city of Makeni.

While in Makeni, the Chairman of the ceremony, who also doubles as the Bombali District Council Chairman, Councilor Eric Dura Sesay, described government effort in setting up the committee as timely and a point in the right direction.

Chairman Eric Dura called on Sierra Leoneans to support the golden celebration open heartily for its success.

The golden jubilee celebration on the theme: “Celebrating a New Sierra Leone”, Chairman Dr. Williams Conteh, informed locals and stakeholders that they are currently touring the country to remind people that come next year the country will be 50 and to tell them of plans being considered for the anniversary.

Dr. Williams Conteh said President Ernest Koroma wants us to celebrate differently and wants it to be of national event, characters and out of politics but development focused.

The anniversary committee, which is made up of 40 members drawn from all walks of life that represent stakeholders in the country, is divided into three sub groups charged with the responsibility to go round the country and engage people and gather their views on how to celebrate the occasion.

Informing Sierra Leoneans in the North, the chairman for the committee, Dr. Conteh said the celebration will start on January 1st and last to 31st December 2010 which, according to him, they plan to stage all events simultaneous all over the country with programmes from entertainment to education and fashion show, etc. which will last for the stated timeframe.

“The celebration will reflect on the country’s achievements and the future and at the end, we will ask ourselves how far we have gone, he concluded.

On behalf of the youth, the Regional Chairman of SLAJ, Stanley Bangura Jr. described 2010 as the year of hope for the youth and celebrating 50 years in 2011 means we have to work for our generation, and for all the planned programmes to work well, we need to put all efforts, he advised.

Stanley Bangura called on the committee to encourage local musicians to focus on our traditional musicians, the area of wild life, historical places, first highway, etc.

The women’s representative and Director for Women Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (WOCEGAR), Mary Y. Conteh called on all her colleagues to come on board for this special celebrations, noting that, development starts from within and with the support from government, they as women will ensure that the 50th golden jubilee celebration becomes fruitful.

Setting up of district committees in all districts visited by the team in the North, climaxed the consultation in the north as they are expected to be in Magburaka over the weekend while the others are in the south and east.
