New television network to hit the airwaves
Capital Cable Network Television Limited (CCNTV) will hit the airwaves in Sierra Leone this August with its twenty- four channel TV station. Managing Director Mohamed Jah said the channels will be dedicated to producing Christian and Muslim, education; women, gender and children’s issues; sports; entertainment; news about the environment; local and international news and music.
The MD also revealed that the station is going to be the first ever digital television to be operated in Sierra Leone, but noted: “The station will not be free-to-air but the cost will be affordable to Sierra Leoneans as it is an all Sierra Leonean entity.” He further disclosed that the station will be supported by Telecast, a television manufacturer based in the United States and China.
“The station will be equipped with a video-on-demand system. It is going to broadcast 40% local and 60% foreign programs,” he explained. The system will cater for both the young and old generations in the country.
Cable television is a system of providing television to consumers via radio frequency signals transmitted to televisions through fixed optical fibres or coaxial cables located on the subscribers property, much like the over-the-air method used in traditional television broadcasting in which a television antenna is required.
It is most commonplace in North America, Europe, Australia and East Asia, though it is present in many other countries, mainly in South America and the Middle East. Cable TV has had little success in Africa, as it is not cost-effective to lay cables in sparsely populated areas. So-called “wireless cable” or microwave-based systems are used instead.
CCNTV will offer its subscribers and viewers’ quality programming at an affordable rate and will embark on an aggressive marketing campaign to attract more customers, as its strategies are to build and maintain a larger and manageable customer’s base.
Channels will be available for 24 hours. Education and Children’s programs, and parents will have control over what their children can and cannot view in the 16 channels by using passwords. One channel will be allocated to local and international sports.
As there are two main religions in Sierra Leone, we have decided to allocate one channel to Christian program AGAPE and one to the Muslim program (AL-HIKMA) for the airing of their various beliefs.
Mr. Jah strongly maintained and stressed that CCNTV is not creating a medium for religious rivalry or competition, but to provide a medium as a message board for all believers of their respective religion.
