Hughes International Security workers call on government attention
Workers of Hughes International Security Company are calling on the attention of the government to step in to salvage the long standing problem of salaries and benefit to be paid to about hundred workers by the management.
Hughes International Security Company been the oldest security company in the country and in recent years was faced with serious financial difficulties to the extent of having problems to pay monthly salaries let alone talk of benefits to some workers that have decided to call it quits due to bad conditions of service.
Last year over fifty ex-workers and the management were in court demanding their benefits from the company. The court ruled in flavor of these ex-workers and the management was ordered by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to calculate what each worker should have in order for the security company to pay these workers as the Labour Law demand.
However, the management was unable to honour its obligation and a court order was issued to close the main office at Kissy House 54 Sheka Stevens Street Freetown.
Due to the non payment of salaries security officers despoiled at various posts abandon there posting for days without no excuse from their employers nor to the authorities they are securing. As a result many contracts were withdrawn from Hughes Security Company which intensifies the issue to pay all those the company had laid off.
As a result of the pressure the company has quit its original building to an unknown site without paying a single cent to all these workers. Workers that are victims of this unfortunate situation are calling on the government to help trace and compel the security agency to pay them their back log and benefits as stipulated by law.
Investigations conducted by this medium have revealed that the first three Managing Directors of the company defrauded the agency of billions and vacated the company and this is the very reason the oldest security agency with twenty years excellent service country wide is going down the drain due to the two years delay in the court matter.
Regaerdless of the determination of some faithful workers and management in shaping back the business to prevent a loss of jobs for 2,000 Sierra Leoneans this prove futile as the only remedy remaining is Government intervention.
