Nigeria’s women move to the top of their group

First half goals from Amarachi Okoronkwo and Desire Oparanozie’s mean Nigeria now top their group which also includes England and Mexico.
Japan’s Mana Iwabuchi, scored her side’s goal midway through the second half but the Nigerian’s held on for a victory.
England were beaten 1-0 by Mexico in the other group game.
Nigeria scored their opener in just the 6th minute through Okoronkwo after Ebere Orji’s cross caused confusion between Shoko Yamada and goalkeeper Erina Yamane.
Orji’s trickery again confounded the Japanese for the second as she burst down the left flank and crossed only for Oparanozie to coolly slot it in at the back post.
Japan had come from behind to draw 3-3 with Mexico in a game on Wednesday but they couldn’t repeat that feat against Nigeria.
Nigeria had also come from behind to draw against England in their opening game.
Nigeria who are top on goals difference, will next face Mexico on Wednesday in Bochum, while Japan take on England at the same time in Bielefeld.
Africa’s other representatives in the competition, Ghana, did not fare as well as the Falconets, as they were beaten 4-2 by North Korea.
Ghana led 2-1 early in the second half but allowed their opponents to score three times in the final 28 minutes.
Ghana play Switzerland in their final game on Wednesday. The Swiss beaten 5-0 by the USA and have now conceded nine goals in their first two games.
