PMDC demands more power for PPRC

Change Party (PMDC), William A.B. Tucker yesterday pledged his party’s support and commitment to work with the restructured Political Parties Registration Commission.

His commitment came during the second week of the Commission’s visit to political parties and development partners.

Mr. Tucker said his party attaches great importance to the existence and work of the PPRC as their attention is more focused on the commission, noting that the commission has a very sensitive and important role to play ahead of the 2012 elections in Sierra Leone.

Receiving the draft recommendations on the legal reform of the Political Parties Act of 2002 and the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, Mr. Tucker said the commission needs to be given powers to take punitive actions against defaulters of the Political Parties Act and the Code of Conduct for Political Parties. This he said is a present weakness that is affecting the work of the commission.

He opined that if the commission was given more powers, there is the possibility of s non-violence 2012.

Mr. Tucker observed that if the commission is given the power to take punitive actions against defaulters, there is no need for the institution of Military Aid to Civil Power (MAC-P) during elections.

In his conclusion, Mr. Tucker expressed optimism on the ability of the restructured commission whiles assuring the commission that the PMDC will do all in its power to support the recommendations made by the commission.

The month long activities will serve as a platform to strengthen the collaboration between PPRC and its development partners.
