ICFJ Launches Global Online Learning Center
Washington, D.C. – The International Center for Journalists has launched ICFJ Anywhere, a Web site offering journalism courses for participants around the world.
The courses will cover a variety of topics. In Iran, for example, students will learn to cover social issues. In Latin America they will focus on immigration. Middle Eastern students will study investigative reporting.
Instructors will teach the classes in local languages. When participants speak different languages, the program will translate their comments daily. That will encourage discussions and debate. Muslim and Western journalists, for example, might discuss different ways to cover religion.
On the Web site, students can search for courses by topic, region and deadline. The site also will feature stories from participants.
“ICFJ Anywhere allows us to train in countries where it’s difficult to send instructors,†said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. “Now there are no limits to where we can work.â€
The United States Institute of Peace funded the Web site. Other organizations sponsor courses. They include Aljazeera Media Training and Development Center, Carnegie Corporation of New York, McCormick Foundation, The McGraw-Hill Companies, and The National Endowment for Democracy.
ICFJ offered its first online course in 2008. Since then, more than 1,500 people have taken 55 courses in seven languages.
