And the winner is – Kao Denero
After long running battles as to who is Sierra Leone’s best hip-hop act, controversial artist Kao Denero may have finally got the nod as the King of Salone Hip-Hop after SLMTV crowned him for the second consecutive time as Best Rapper. (Photo: Kao Denero, King of Salone Hip-Hop)
Kao, incidentally, was not present at the awards ceremony held at Capitol Height, Maryland, USA, on July 2nd 2010 when the award was announced. However, the organizers reportedly phoned him immediately he was declared winner of the most coveted category. Kao’s reaction to the news is not yet available to salonejamboree.com, but on a recent interview with us the artist said he did not base his music career on awards.
The Freetown Most wanted star beat old and new rivals including Problem M and LAJ. Kao and LAJ were in Freetown during their country’s 49th Independence anniversary celebrations where their rivalry was further ignited during their performance with international superstar Akon at the National Stadium main bowl. Both artists returned to the states in time for the SLMTV awards, but surprisingly did not attend the grand event.
“I think the SLMTV hip-hop award should finally lay to rest all arguments about who is Sierra Leone’s best rapper,” said Majeed, who’s been following events in the musiccindustry back home.
Kao also won Best Collaboration for his hit single Baby featuring RJ.
Meanwhile, while failing to win the category he would have most loved, LAJ claimed two awards, including Best Single for the popular hit Money Na Bank (Remix).
In other categories, M.B. Atilla was honored with a Life Time Achievement award for his contribution to Sierra Leone music. Atilla, formerly of Blind Musical Flames, has now gone gospel and is based in the US.
Brown Sugar lady, Amit, won Best Video in the female category while the R&B category went to Daddy Rhymes.
At long last innovative hip-hop music producer, Tetteh, won Best Producer.
In the film/short movie category, introduced for the first time in the annual SLMTV awards, singer come actor/producer Jimmy B won the category. (See full list below).
