Charles Margai Dodges Court
Yesterday June 23, 2010 leader of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Charles Francis Margai (in photo) dodged the Freetown High court in respect of a constitutional standoff between him and Mohamed Bangura, the suspended Chairman of the PMDC.
The PMDC Chairman, Mohamed Bangura and his supporters were at the Law court yesterday where embattled PMDC leader Charles failed to appear in a matter that has left the party in total disarray, leading to the present court action by the party’s National Chairman, Mohamed Bangura. Â
Speaking to his supporters outside the law court building, Mr. Bangura assured them that he will win the case, reiterating however that the PMDC does not believe in fighting which is why they sought a redress in court so that the party constitutional breach will be solved.
He went on to assure his supporters that he believes that come 2012, “PMDC will create a mark by winning the presidential election.” The Chairman also said he has hired six lawyers for his defense; men he said are versed in constitutional law and are ready to fight, as he put it, for the common good as against the impending evil reflected in the lack of respect for the constitution by some selfish PMDC party members.
The present legal tussle that has engulfed the PMDC came amidst series of allegations that the leader of the party now suddenly sees no reason to maintain the party as the leadership is unable to fund its own activities and as such could not operate as a party.
Also in the limelight are allegations that Charles Francis Margai has decided on going back to the SLPP where he now sees himself as the fittest candidate to emerge as winner in the upcoming 2011 party convention where a leader will be chosen to fly the SLPP flag in the coming 2012 general elections.
Mohamed Banguara, on the other hand, as Chairman of the party is said to be strongly opposing the idea of dissolving the party which is why, according to him, a fictitious letter of suspension was sent to him, asking him to stand down for three years.
This development, according to Bangura, is what has led to the present court action that forms the latest highlight in the party.
Other developments Sierra Express has been privy to is that the North America Chapter of the Party has passed a vote of no confidence on the leadership of Charles Margai, a development many political analysts referred to as a big blow to the embattled leader as the said chapter forms the financial base of the party. Â
