HE’s Press Secretary and the book of Genesis
The first book of the Holy Bible is Genesis; in it we have the story of creation followed by God putting the first man Adam and the first woman Eve in the Garden of Eden with specific instructions on “dos & don’ts.†Then the Serpent tempted Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit. She in turn talked Adam into it; When the Lord caught up with them, Adam said, “It was the woman that Thou gavest to me who tempted me†the woman in turn said, “It was the serpent that tempted me.†That marked the beginning of man’s separation from God. I listened with utter dismay to his Excellency the President’s press secretary’s response on the serious concern expressed by the UN over what he had put out in a press release on UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon’s recent visit to Sierra Leone. “Not every release from my office comes directly from me. Sometimes it is from my staff and I only put it out. I was not even at the news conference; it is what was handed to me.†Or words to that effect.
I have read or heard some ridiculous and idiotic statements in my time but that one from the Presidential Press secretary on SLBC’s Tuesday tea break programme will take some beating. Here is a high ranking official responsible for reporting all activities at the seat of power telling the world that other people wrote the release and his was to put it out. Why did he not cross-check and make necessary amendments immediately it provoked controversy?
Instead he sat down contentedly while APC operatives jubilated in places like the United States over the “UN’s support for the APC’s planned inquest?â€
He waited until the UN expressed concern and after the Secretary to the President issued an amended release before making such a lame excuse that he did not write the earlier one.
What is he waiting for?
Why does he not do the most honourable thing by packing his bags like Sanpha Koroma did after the furor caused by the affair of the Presidential pension?
Is he waiting until gentleman Ernest shows him the red card?
All the same it is amazing that the minister of information and communication who was with the President and the Secretary-General throughout the visit did not detect the blunder and correct it; or more likely did he see it but did nothing because it earned the APC a propaganda point? Poor Ernest!
