Sierra Leonean Women in the US Boost Country’s Health Care Delivery

A consignment of medical items shipped by the Sierra Leone Women’s Movement of Massachusetts (SLWOM) last April, is expected to arrive in Freetown in the next few days, says the Secretary General of the organization.

Zainab Kamara made the official disclosure to this writer in a phone interview from the United States recently. “We are shipping some relief items, including, medical equipments – mattresses, wheel chairs, boxes of bed sheets and clothes which will be delivered to one of Freetown’s main referral hospitals, the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH)”, said the SLWOM scribe.

The items, worth thousands of United States Dollars, she adds, are donations received from various relief organizations in the US and are expected to boost the country’s free medical delivery launched by His Excellency, the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on 27th April, 2010.

The Sierra Leone Women’s Movement of Massachusetts, Inc. founded in September, 2008 is a non-political and charity organization established for the primary purpose of advancing the educational, cultural and medical needs of Sierra Leoneans, particularly women and children.

SLWOM  has been working to attract US doctors, Para-medical personnel, nurses and other medical specialists to travel to Sierra Leone and help in improving the country’s medical institutions and clinics.

“There is a greater need of expertise in the medical field and the availability of overseas medical professionals will go a long way to improving the health facilities in Sierra Leone,” the President of this relief organization, Ms. Gillian Mcfoy noted.

In an effort to do so, its board members, Ms. Gillian Mcfoy, the President, Mrs. Bomporo Savage, Vice President, Mrs. Zainab Kamara, Secretary General, Ms. Nyambe Tawah Executive Director, Ms. Ntuma Kabba, Treasurer, to name but a few, have been working tirelessly on a project to generate funds within the US.

The Secretary General made the remark that charitable donations related to this effort will medically help many patients in various hospitals in Sierra Leone. “Our short term goal is to reduce the mortality rate due to child birth, malaria and other preventable health related causes,” Vice President, Board Member, Mrs. Bomporo Savage explained.

Meanwhile, the organization is schedule to organize its 2nd Annual Fund Raising Dinner on Friday, June 18, 2010 at the Emerald Hall in Boston. “All proceeds will benefit various hospitals in Sierra Leone,” Zainab Kamara reiterated.

Reacting to the news on the telephone line from Freetown last night, Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed Daudis Koroma described the donation as “a positive gesture”.  He appealed to other Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora to emulate the gesture and promised that the donation will be adequately utilized for its intended purposes.

  • May God almighty bless you all . May Allah provide and direct others to fellow the foot step of this patriot. It is high time we Sierra Leoneans start looking in the mirror. The question is what have we done lately and practically for our community and our country as a whole. Let us stop ridiculing our country. until we start treating issues in our country with serious and genuineness we can not have a proper check and balances. For development sake let stop the politicizing of everything in our society.Once again God bless this patriots.
