Deputy Commissioner calls for joint effort to fight corruption

The Deputy Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has made the carrion call to the people of Port Loko District where he recently concluded a one day sensitization drive on the role and responsibility of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Commissioner Morlai Buya Kamara said the fight against corruption is enormous and could only be won when all hands are on deck to achieve the desired goal.

He said there was need for all to join the fight largely because the national revenue basket has been, as he put it, perforated by ill-meaning people.

The Deputy Commissioner went further to allay the fears of natives on the explanation that the Commission was not there to arrests people but that it has the mandate to guide people and educate them on its objectives through system reviews.

He made a special reference to the series of indictments preferred on some group of people under the Gavi Funds as well as the NRA workers who perforated the ASUCUDA system to enrich themselves.

On the education sector, Morlai Buya Kamara noted with dismay that certain school authorities were found inflating  figures of both  schools and pupils and therefore advised those engaged in such malpractice to stop as the Commission will soon issue out indictments to combat the situation.

He spoke of the Service Charter now established in hospitals which he said will help people not to pay above the official cost of drugs.

The Deputy Commissioner said the task is such that the Commission sees the police, the Public Service Reform Unit, the Media, the Public Accounts Committee in parliament, Civil Society and the Integrity Committee as partners in the fight against corruption.

He assured the gathering that the commission has no political linings which was why it has been able to indict sitting ministers, medical doctors, etc.

In conclusion, he stressed the need for Government to improve both the human capacity and the condition of service of civil servants so that they can earn decent wages.

Speaking at the gathering were Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the North/Western Region, F.U.K. Daboh and the Port Loko District Council Chairman, Ahmid Muniru Fofanah, among others.
