SLUDI ends popularization meeting

The Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) in collaboration with Sight Savers through European Commission funding ended a day’s National Forum and popularization session for persons with disability on Tuesday 20th August, at the new district council hall Nyandeyama Road, Kenema, on the theme promoting inclusive health services for all including persons with a disability.  (Photo: Disabled persons at the meeting)

In his welcoming address the eastern region, focal person Hanafi Sowa, welcomed participants and said that the popularization program is to draw the attention of all and sundry including key stakeholders in the region to participate and to share information with regards the subject matter of the program and encouraged them to make the occasion a successful one.

In his opening remarks chairperson Richard M. Saowi thanked participants for leaving their busy schedule to attend a meeting summoned by the physically challenged.

The president SLUDI said their program is partnering with Sight Savers to fight very hard for people with disability to have free health medical facilities.

He said over the months many disabled have lost their lives because they did not have money to visit the medical facilities and therefore called on the government to implement section 17 of the Disability Act on the law that provides for free medical care for the disabled.

He reiterated that the Commission of Disability couldn’t pile pressure on the government to listen to the voices of disability because the chief commissioner is an appointment from government which is why SLUDI has taken up the responsibility to do so.

The eastern region commissioner of Disable Eco Scotland said that they are not requesting to be part of the free medical but rather they are anticipating for a free health care service that will cater and care for disabled as stated in section 17 of the Disability Act.

Abdurrahman Swaray a representative from Handicap International said their organization has long been working with persons with disability to attain this concern and promised that they will continue to give necessary support towards the course.
