Food: Gap In Koroma’s Free Healthcare

A discussion on the challenges faced by the newly introduced Free Healthcare Scheme for pregnant women, lactating mothers and infants under five years of age has ended in Port Loko with an appeal for the establishment of therapeutic feeding centre at the government hospital in district.

This appeal came forth as a recommendation from the discussion that was masterminded by various civil society activists in the district who now see the absence of the provision of food and therapeutic feeding as very big gap in the President’s Free Health Care Scheme; and thus must be addressed.

Appeals were also made for the provision of an X-Ray machine, a blood bank, adequate accommodation, among others to enhance effective service delivery in the District Health Care Service delivery. The Port Loko District Medical Officer- Dr. Victor Matt Lebbie said the free healthcare scheme had “increased the demand for medical services by a hundred fold and therefore puts pressure on the Health Care Management Team who most times fall out supply and battle with capacity problems.

Other emerging factors it was said were those of water and sanitation, staff capacity at the central district hospitals and other peripheral health clinics.
