Literate, maybe, educated, that’s different

There is a whole world of difference between being literate and being educated, or of possessing a degree and being educated, just as there is a world of difference between being grown up and being mature. Sometimes the difference is subtle and at other times it could be very glaring. Even in the newspaper business there is vast difference between a prose writing editor and a satirist or a cartoonist. In the Tuesday June 2 edition of the New Citizen newspaper the editor tried his hand at satire but unfortunately for him he chose the aging Puawui as the subject of his literary venture. I wonder how he himself assessed his first effort; did he think that he had made a success of it? As for me I shall reserve my judgment for another occasion. Be that as it may I would advise the young man to spend a couple of hours a day with Olu-Gordon who has mastered the art to such a degree that even I enjoy his output, insults, sarcasms and all. I am quite sure that dear Olu won’t charge Samuel Conteh a dime for his time. He may even add a bonus by letting the novice satirist read how the Dinosaur Poo-an-wee once responded when he Olu ventured to write that Sama Banya’s brain was to be opened for analyses. He quietly shelved his mischievous venture. At least I did not read about it anymore. This time round all I shall do is to warn young Samuel Conteh that he may not find Puawui’s response amusing. LONTA!

My friends of the Red sun never cease to amaze me; in conversations with a good number of my Torpkoi associates within the last ten days, I called their attention to an article written from the United States a couple of months earlier revealing an APC plan to bring up the 1982 NPRC executions of Bambay Kamara and others IF the Torkpoists were to settle on Julius Maada Bio as the party’s Flag bearer for 2012. We all agreed that it would be done not so much to secure a “guilty” verdict; the primary objective would be to make the case a source of distraction so that both Bio and the party would not concentrate on the Presidential campaign. From the day when minister of information and communication indicated that government was being pressurized family and friends of the deceased to have the matter investigated it has become common knowledge that in fact IT IS THE APC AS A PARTY AND GOVERNMENT which intends to bring the matter up. IB was only fooling himself by saying the move was initiated by relatives of the deceased. The announcement which was confirmed by the BBC’s Freetown correspondent Umaru Fofana on Tuesday has stirred interesting public debate on whether or not a commission should be set up. The Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission the Rt. Reverend Bishop Dr. Joseph Humper has stated categorically that the move is not a procedure of wisdom as it would certainly open a Pandora’s Box. Civil Society and other groups are adding their voices to the debate. i shall continue to monitor the discussions with keen interest. But, is there any reason why James Bambay junior should address Bishop Humper and the SLPP as stupid? One can understand your emotion but good manners is what counts in these matters. We know the APC too well and like I was saying at the beginning, the only surprise in the matter is its timing. A good number of us had thought that the APC would wait until the SLPP convention in 2011 before their curious move, but they may be afraid that Bambay Kamara’s children may not be here then to create the impression that it was they who had presurised the government to initiate the action. That notwithstanding this government would be well advised to consider the wider implications of its present plan. In the meantime it is generally agreed among SLPP supporters that the move “nor go born good pikin.” That is that the outcome will not be in the long term interest of the country. However it would be interesting to know who was the spokesman of the NPRC at the material time in 1992 and what, if anything he had to say about the affair at the time.
