Domestic Violence – Parents set 10 years-old hands on fire!

Ibrahim Sorie Barrie, a pupil at the Teachers Banta Primary School at Fourah Bay Road, in Freetown, who resides with his parents at 22 Lower Easton Street, is presently suffering from serious burns on both hands after his parents set them both on fire for stealing cake. The two parents, Mamadu Barrie and disabled mother Suad Barrie, who both happened to be fasting on the day of the incident, set the boys hands on fire with kerosene after learning that he had stolen a cake at a nearby bakery on Friday 18th September. Speaking to Mr. Barrie, the victim’s father told Sierra Express Media that he is a beggar and that when the complaint was brought to him, claiming that his child had stolen a cake from the bakery, the cake owners threatened to cast a devilish spell on the whole of the boy’s family. Mr. Barrie said since he did not want to share in the sin of his son, he and wife decided to punish the boy in the full view of his accusers by burning both hands.

The father added that the boy’s stealing habit has made him a laughing stock in the neighbourhood and so he wanted to get rid of such a habit forever which led to the burning of the boy’s hands. Mr. Barrie noted that the boy had once stolen his teacher’s phone which cost them (the parents) Le300,000 ($100) adding that there are many more incidents to the list.

The condition of the boys burnt hands was so severe that he was rushed to the Ola a nearby children’s hospital to receive first aid treatment. The doctor on duty at that time, Dr. Frederick Coker, told SEM that he did not treat the boy because of the magnitude of the injury caused as a result of the fire burns and had to refer him to the government emergency unit that has a specialist for such damages.

The matter is presently at the Ross Road Police station in care of the Family Support Unit (FSU) with the parents in police custody.
