Statistics Sierra Leone Maluma Andrew Ngebeh, has said that the country has experienced three steps increase in the inflation from 10.2% in August to 10.5% for the month of September.

In an interview with the Chief Director of Trade and the Professional Head at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Emmanuel Konjor said that the inflation could be as a result of the increment in the fuel pump price from eight thousand five hundred Leones to ten thousand Leones.

“Every time there is an increase in fuel pump price there is a possibility of it to affect all other goods in the country”, he said, adding that the inflation had affected about 90% of the goods and services including food and non-food items like building materials and that prices and commodity changes must be tracked frequently.

“Inflation has been seen as the order of the day as prices of goods and services continue to increase daily in the country which makes it difficult for citizens to acquire a single meal a day for over five years now. It is obvious that this government is unable to handle and manage this situation of consistent price increase and settle the bread and butter issues which was a major promise in their past election campaign”, said Jonathan Vandi, a business man in Freetown.

In response to the report of Statistics Sierra Leone, the Chief Director of Trade said the government has been doing very well in managing the inflation and prices of commodities and fuel in the country.

“The Government of Sierra Leone has been paying fuel subsidies in the country which is why our pump price is the least in the sub region as compared to Liberia and Guinea; the cost of rice in Sierra Leone is below fifty US dollars as compared to Liberia which is Fifty Five dollars per bag”.

He continued that the pandemic which affects the world is another reason for the inflation in the country. He assured that the Government and Ministry of trade are working assiduously to reduce the rate of inflation.
