Sierra Leone Road Crashes Claimed 867 Lives In 2020

The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has last week published statistics of road crashes of the year 2020. The release disclosed unprecedented road crashes of 2,763 to which records 867 deaths.

The release continued that amongst the 867 deaths, 501 are men, 334 women and 32 children, adding that 770 were seriously injured, some even amputated.

The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority was established in 1996 by an Act of Parliament.

Being an Act of parliament it was established as an Authority to regulate and develop the road transport industry, including the registration and licensing of vehicles, the licensing of drivers, the prescription of routes for passengers and good transportation and for other matters connected with the foregoing.

The objective of the Sierra Leone Road safety Authority is to regulate, co-ordinate and promote efficiency in all activities within the road transport sector with a view to enhancing or improving the contribution of that sector to economic development in Sierra Leone.

To design, develop and administer rules and regulations regarding road safety and transportation

To undertake the development of the human resources needed to service the transport industry, through training and retraining needs of transport personnel in the private sector.

To study and advice Government on vehicle standardization and maintenance back-up policy, taking into consideration the need to conserve the environment.

To promote road safety

To establish and maintain a data bank of relevant information on vehicles and the transport industry as a whole.

To do all such things as are necessary, expedient or conductive to the attainment of the objectives for which the Authority was set up.

The mandate of SLRSA is to design and administer rules and regulations regarding:

The registration and licensing of vehicles whether for private or commercial use

The testing of the fitness of vehicles for their intended use and the fitness of persons to be drivers of vehicle

The licensing drivers and vehicles

The inspection and supervision of vehicle repair and maintenance service

The routing and monitoring of passengers and goods transportation

It vision is; their co-operate strategy is their response to environmental opportunities, challenges and threats, consistent with their competence and resources. It makes clear the sort and purposes of business in which we find ourselves, and tries to position the business in the context of the future. Reasonable rationality has been exercised in arriving at the vision.

MISSION

To regulate and develop the road transport industry, including the registration and licensing of vehicles, the licensing of drivers, the prescription of routes for passengers and good transportation and for other matters connected with the foregoing.
