SALWACO In Hot Water
Engineers at the Sierra Water Company (SALWACO) have found themselves in hot water and contempt of Parliament after they lied to Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Water Resources that they have implemented all water and other related projects under their watch.
On an oversight visit by the committee on Water Resources on Tuesday 15th December 2020 at Matotoka, Tonkolili district Northern Sierra Leone, the committee discovered that the Solar Bore Hole project which engineers at SALWACO had told them that they have completed the project which is a big fat lie. As per the project design, it should have been completed since 2019 but yet still; the project is far from completion. The supervisory engineer in charge of this project, Engineer Toby told members of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Water Resources that since the commencement of the project, he has never visited the site due to lack of vehicle to do so. The building of the project is completely substandard to the disappointment of the entire committee when SALWCA has told Parliament that they have completed the project and hands it over to the community. Eng. Toby disclosed to members of the committee that the building is poorly constructed. He added that the total cost for the 100 hundred Bore Holes is 32 billion Leones and the project cut across the country and each bore hole should have 15 pumps.
Parliamentary Oversight Committee Chairman on Water Resources, Hon. Lahai Marah expressed his disappointment over the lack of respect and value for money the engineers have displayed over the project. He noted that SALWACO has told Parliament that the project has been completed and they have lied to parliament and it is contempt of parliament and it is like a criminal offence.
