Kobema RC School Kenema, A Death Trap
Kobema Roman Catholic Primary School at the Comende Luwama Lower Bambara Chiefdom in the Kenema district is currently a death trap as the single block of three class rooms is in a disastrous shape. Children seat on the bare floor that has classes one to four. For classes five and six, they are using a thatch structure and sometimes they hold classes under a tree and it is impossible to conduct classes when it is raining.
According to the headmaster of the school, Mr. Jusu said he is worried over the present condition of the school with regards to it structure. He added that the one single block they are using is in a bad shape as the wall of the building is being supported with sticks, no doors and windows.
Mr. Jusu further explained that the Catholic Church school manager, Rev. Father Mondeh is yet to visit the school for the past three years and the Catholic Mission has completely abandoned the school. He disclosed that he is the only trained and qualify teacher in the school and all other teachers are community teachers and untrained and unqualified. He added that the current school roll is 245 pupils, class one-67 pupils, class two-55 pupils, class three-38 pupils, class four-32 pupils and classes five and six are 23, 20 respectively.
The condition of this school is similar to hundreds of other schools in remote villages in the provinces and these speak contrary to the New Direction Manifesto that promised to give out free quality education to the children of Sierra Leone. Present condition of the school if not address quickly is poised to cause disaster to the children who are attending that school. The school building can collapse at any time as the sticks used to support the walls have been eaten by termites.
The attention of government and non-governmental organizations is needed to address such an ugly and disaster prone situation.
