FAHP calls on the eradication of FGM in Sierra Leone
The death of one Mariatu Kamara, aged 10, in a female secret society bush at Gaindama Section, Yoni Mamaila Chiefdom in the Tonkolili District, has saw to a clarion call on Government to act tough on the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice.
Following an autopsy result which revealed the cause of the death of the ten years old girl was as a result of excessive bleeding and pain, the Forum against Harmful Practice (FAHP) has taken the lead to call on Government to sign and implement the National Strategy on ending FGM.
Deputy Chairlady of FAHP, Madam Aminata Koroma in a sad mood expressed that the soul serves as a sacrificial lamb to end the menace. The National Strategy, she assured will end the practice of FGM in the country.
“Every now and then we have received reports of the deaths girls and children while undergoing FGM”, cried Madam Koroma pointing out that the practice has multiple negative effects both on the victims and the human resource based of the country.
She continued that the practice over the years has contributed to the increasing girls dropouts from schools especially in the rural communities and also an increase in death at child birth.
Another activist, Lucy Ann Ganda also expressed similar sentiment and called on Government to sign and implements the National Strategy on FGM.
