SLPP Plan To Shut Down Sierra Express Media & Times Newspapers
Report reaching this medium from the corridors of State House indicates that the “New Direction” government is planning to shut down Sierra Express Media (SEM) and the Times Newspaper on the grounds that these two local tabloids are very vociferous in checkmating the excesses of the current dispensation.
Sources say that some SLPP members believed to be owners of some local tabloids are rallying behind top officials of the SLPP Government identifying these two aforementioned newspapers as opposition and ones that deserve to be closed down in a bid to silent dissenting voice.
It was also quoted to have said that if these two newspapers namely; Times Newspaper & Sierra Express Media are weeded-out of the system, this will give the government a sigh of relief to do things at their own whim and caprice without any dissenting voice to checkmate them.
It could be recalled that during the media cocktail dinner organized by the Office of President to interface with press men from different media houses across the country, President Bio was quoted to have accused Sierra Express Media and other media houses as opposition papers because of their stance in opposing the excesses of his government.
‘”Mr. Vice President, don’t take this personal, but I am reliably informed by the grapevine that you are the ghost news editor for Sierra Express Media, which put out a story in June this year complaining that food commodity prices were skyrocketing with the banner headline: Sierra Leone Turns Hell. I really have a problem with this headline, simply because you failed to crosscheck your facts with my friend Momoh Konte who recently traveled to hell and back”.
The above statements suggest that president Bio is unhappy with the operations of Sierra Express Media and other newspapers perceived to be as oppositionĀ as he’sĀ doing all he can to shut them down .
