Sierra Leone Cancer Charity Two Day Training For Medical Doctors And Clerks

The National Cancer Registrar, Abdul Otonjo Conteh has informed The Health Newspaper that a two days workshop will be organized for 25 Medical Record Clerks and 25 Medical Doctors on Cancer Registration by the Sierra Leone Cancer Charity with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) at the Connaught Teaching Hospital Conference Room, Administrative Building.  (Photo: National Cancer Registrar, Abdul Otonjo Conteh)

The Registrar was responding to an exclusive interview at his Connaught Hospital office in Freetown on Tuesday 27th November 2018.

According Mr. Conteh, the training will commence on Monday 3rd for Medical Record Clerks and continues on Tuesday 4th December 2018 for Medical Doctors.

He maintained that overview on WHO National Cancer Control Programme, Sierra Leone Strategic Plans on Cancer, Update on Registry data and challenges, Cancer Care delivery in Connaught Hospital, and staging and coding of Cancer Cases and labeling of samples are the purposes of the workshop for Medical Record Clerks.

The National Cancer Registrar also highlighted that the medical doctors will be trained with the aim of not only to equip medical records clerks with skills and knowledge required to carry out the day-to-day work of registration but also to maintain and organized database in healthcare facilities at regional and national level, examine pathology reports and patients medical records in order to obtain data for those involved in cancer management programmes, understanding the assignment of diagnosis and treatment codes for various malignant and Cancerous condition.

He further reiterated that learning how to update patient records with new entries such as health of patient and additional treatment and to learn how to learn how to control follow-up on all patients listed in the register to obtain information about treatment about treatment, recovery and survival.

He said Medical Records Clerks dealt with all medical records while he said, Medical Doctors diagnosed and treat patients with Cancer adding that in the end of the training, they are would be expecting medical records clerks to be able and organized data base in healthcare facilities at regional and national level.

“The training targeted Western Rural and Urban Areas where we are currently collecting data for Cancer”, he told reporters and he explained plan to take similar programme to the provinces after establishing registry across the country for care of patients with Cancer disease.

He emphasized on the Government determination to combat Cancer and cited the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Madam Fatima Bio plan to get a Cancer Registry Centre for Sierra Leone.

He explained that Cancer care has improved in the country for the fact that he said, the Government of His Excellency Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio has demonstrated tremendous effort to support patients with Cancer in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Abdul Otonjo Conteh concluded by admonishing that early prevention of Cancer could lead to the timely extermination of the ailment.
