Ag. Director of Forestry on Environment Protection
The new Ag. Director of Forestry Division in the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS), Alpha Umaru Leigh said planting more trees is very important for the protection of the fragile ecosystem.
Responding to an exclusive interview in Freetown, Ag. Director maintained that the act of planting more trees could help divert natural disaster like mudslide adding that the trees are also important to boost economic growth through timber trade.
Mr Alpha Umaru Leigh commended the Minister of Agriculture for having early engagement with His Excellency Julius Maada Bio for this year’s tree planting.
Despite the planting of not less than three thousand seedling trees in each of the sixteen districts across the country, the Ag. D has also transformed the looks of the four main offices including two directorate offices with new brand furniture, refrigerators, air conditioners, plasma televisions, carpets, window cottons among other decorative items.
Mr. Leigh therefore appealed to the Ministry of Finance to allocate more budgets to the Forestry Division to achieve their goals and objectives.
He concluded that tree planting has been a participatory exercise since it was introduced by Late President Siaka Steven.
