UNICEF taps Chernor Bah for gender discrimination & harassment role
Sierra Leonean born global champion for girls’ rights and education, Chernor Bah, also known as Ceebah, has been appointed by the United Nations children’s body, UNICEF to a high level Independent Task Force on Workplace Gender Discrimination and Harassment.
In a broadcast announcing the Task Force on the UNICEF website, the global children’s agency notes that Chernor Bah the Co-founder of Purposeful Productions will be joining, “external leaders from a range of backgrounds, including from the development, business and non-profit sectors, as well as experts in the gender equality and human rights advocacy.”
The release notes that the ten global experts on the Independent Task Force “share a commitment to, and experience in, shaping positive, inclusive, non-discriminatory and gender-equitable work environment.”
Responding to this latest global call, Ceebah, who recently relocated to Sierra Leone and is a member of the Renaissance Movement said, “I can’t think of a more urgent and important role at this time in history. I look forward to working with these outstanding global leaders and to making my modest contribution in UNICEF’s quest to be an even better organization that will be a leader, free from gender discrimination and all forms of harassment.”
Cee Bah who hails from the slums of Kanikay in the east-end suburbs of Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital and was a refugee during the country’s civil war in the 1990s will join the other experts to review current practices at UNICEF and afterwards provide, “recommendations to effectively and systematically prevent and address gender-related discrimination, harassment and abuse of power in the UNICEF workplace.”
A Secretariat led by UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, Fatoumata Ndiaye will support the work of the Task Force, according to the broadcast. The United Nations has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse, and in recent months, its’ agencies and peacekeeping operations have been caught up in several cases of alleged misconduct.
Bah is no stranger to high-level global appointments. He’s been twice appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to high level assignments on global education and on youth, peace and security.
The Task Force is chaired by two former Assistant Secretary-Generals of the United Nations and includes top academics, business leaders and other reputable individuals in their respective fields.
