Sierra Leone is champion of agriculture

Sierra Leone has been named as the champion of agriculture in the whole of the African continent and the leader in the agrarian sector. This revelation was made by President Ernest Bai Koroma while delivering his speech to Parliament during the Third Session of the Third Parliament of the Second Republic.

According to President Koroma, Sierra Leone has been named as the champion of agriculture for being a role model in increasing agricultural production and productivity in the whole continent and said this was achieved under the present administration.

Speaking in a confident mood, President Koroma revealed that sixty-two acres of rice have been ploughed, an increase of 35 % since the previous year. The president also explained that his government has procured through a loan agreement, 265 tractors and 30 motor bikes from India to enhance agriculture and food self sufficiency in the country.

Other farm mechanical machinery procured by the government to enhance food security includes 58 power tillers and 33 combine harvesters. The president also mentioned that his government has the mandate to advocate for the privatization of agriculture in the country.

Under the present administration, more than ninety thousand bushels of rice have been distributed to farmers. Also the Rokupr Agriculture Laboratory has been upgraded to one of the best in Africa.

Farmers in Sierra Leone currently have been receiving benefits from the government. These benefits, according to President Koroma, include increased subsidized inputs, improved seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers also have access to machinery in each chiefdom and improved storage and processing.

“Efficient policy making is difficult without a robust evidence base,” the president said.

Meanwhile, it has been disclosed that Sierra Leone will soon publish the first “genuinely world class agricultural survey in Sierra Leone.”
