Spain Hosts 32nd Mobile World Congress

The 32nd Mobile World Congress 2018 opened in L’HOSPITALET de Llobregat at Fira de Barcelona, in Barcelona, Spain.

Under the theme “Better Future”, the event was organized by the Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), a global trade body that represents the interests of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) worldwide, comprising  approximately 800 MNOs and a further 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem as associate members.

The Mobile World Congress is a combination of the World’s largest exhibitions for the mobile industry and a conference featuring prominent executives representing mobile operators, vendors, device manufacturers, technology providers and content owners from across the world.

On display are fascinating innovations ranging from a Smartphone-driven car by the Chinese company HUAWEI, the Samsung S9, a 5G Connecred Car, the 5G video Call, telemetry data delivery using SD-WAN to ensure fast data analysis, and a variety of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and Cloud Communication Platforms.

The Congress attracts over 100,000 visitors from Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), Sierra Leone’s telecommunications regulatory authority, sent a delegation of five, headed by Commissioners Frank Manja and Alpha Sesay to abreast themselves with new technologies and their regulatory challenges.

The the four day event ends on 1st March 2018.

The GSMA dates back to 1987 with the signing of an MoU by 13 Operators in 12 countries that committed to deploying GSM for mobile communications.

Full membership is open to all licensed mobile operators using GSM family technology; and Associate membership is open to non-operator companies active in the mobile ecosystems.

The 1987 MoU was a pan-European 900 MHz Digital Cellular Mobile Telecommunications Service document.
