Maada Bio appeals to SLPP delegates

In his final appeal to SLPP delegates, Maada Bio states

On 14th – 15th October 2017 you have the unique opportunity to make history and help transform this great nation that is poorly managed and badly governed, making us one of the poorest countries in the world today!

At this National Party Conference you have the opportunity to democratically elect not only the Presidential Flagbearer for this great and historic party, but the credible and inspiring leader who will bring the SLPP to the State House on 7th March 2018 and transform Sierra Leone into a well-governed, confident, dynamic and prosperous country for all Sierra Leoneans.

You have this great responsibility to make this important choice for the future of the party, this great country and your children. The important question you have to answer with a single ballot paper is: who do you trust to be your Presidential Candidate and effective President of our great Republic?

The fate of a whole nation and its destiny depends on the choice that you will make at this National Party Conference. All of us who have presented ourselves to you as aspirants for this election are decent and honourable men who have given distinguished services to our Party in diverse ways. Some have also served our country and/or contributed to national development in very profound ways. Your choice to elect any one of us to be the Presidential Candidate will be great both for our Party and the country.

Throughout my campaign to you and the general membership of our Party, I have always stated why I am uniquely placed to be elected as your Presidential Candidate. And without equivocation, as you all ponder over which candidate deserves your vote to be our Party’s Presidential Candidate, I am humbled to remind you all of four distinguished records which set me apart from my colleague contenders:

  • First, I have the unique experience of running a country and a government having served in various senior capacities of government including as Head of State.
  • Second, I have the record and credibility of trust and confidence from the international community in keeping my word. I organised the first democratic elections in more than 20 years and willingly handed over power to the civilian elected government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.
  • Third, I have the credible record of initiating the Peace Process in 1996 that eventually led to the civil war peace settlement and end of war in Sierra Leone.
  • Fourth, I am committed to Hard work, Discipline and Believe in the ability of the People of Sierra Leone to transform this country.

As you all prepare yourselves to attend the Party’s conference, I want to also appeal to you that once again our Party will be on a test. The whole country will be watching us to see that we exercise our internal democracy in an atmosphere of peace, comradeship and non-violence. Last month in Kenema, with a successful conference, we proved our critics wrong and started the process of rebuilding the Public’s faith and trust in our Party as a Credible Government in waiting.

During this National Party Conference for the election of Presidential Candidate, let us show our country and the world that the peaceful convention in Kenema was not just a fluke but a conscious effort to put behind us the politics of rancour, acrimony, ill-feeling and violence. As we converge in Freetown, let us treat one another with respect, love, dignity and show the country that we are “One Country, One People.”

Finally, the choice of who becomes our Party’s Presidential Candidate now lies in your hands. I graciously implore you all to make the best decision which will be good for the success of our Party and the development of our country; the land that we all love, our Sierra Leone.

Your humble servant,

Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio,  Aspirant for the 2017 SLPP Flagbearer Election
