GAFSP Boosts Rural Farmers

In a bid to complement Government’s effort and the people of Sierra Leone in order to achieve food self-sufficiency and fulfill the country’s commitment which is to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that aimed at tackling hunger, the Global Agricultural and Food Security Programme (GAFSP) has successfully established 51 Financial Service Associations and 17 Community Banks across the country to support local farmers.

According to the Program’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Amara Kallon, it’s geared towards strengthening Small Scale Farmers to embark on commercialized farming by increasing their access  to financial resources and giving them training opportunities in their respective communities.

He maintained that the programme is decentralized in the province and Western Rural District under the supervision of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Sierra Leone (GOSL).

Kallon furthered that the programme is supporting more than 8,000 local farmers to upgrade their status from subsistence to commercial system of farming and mentioned that the programme intends to reach more farmers.
