Last Friday, it was an emotional scene at the Lungi International Airport when 362 youths boarded an a flight to Iraq, an accomplishment they have relished and craved to attain since the days of the SLPP according to the departing youths who spoke to this press. Before boarding the flight, the youths and their family members accompanying them to the airport broke into chorus, singing songs of praise to the Minister and his government for their commitment to the problems of the youths. “Sending one man to Iraq is saving a thousand people” they acclaimed in one chorus.

“We are grateful to the President and the Minister of Labour for making our life dreams come through; we will ever live to be in the debt of the APC government for this huge boost it has given to not only our survival and prosperity, but also that of the our people, our wives and dependants” Mohamed Senesie, one of the very emotional youths headed for the overseas employment programme who spoke to this medium said.

Answering questions as to how this might help the APC in the coming fight for State House in 2012, the Labour Minister said “we are doing all this to challenge the people of Sierra Leone especially the once disenchanted and disgruntled youths that believe that governments never act in their favor” adding that “as you can see for yourself, the youths are happy, their dependants and family members are happy with the strides made by our government; what else can a government do to win the hearts and souls of the people, this is definitely a very good omen in the  coming 2012 elections  and believe  you me; by the  time our plans for the youths come to fusion, we would not be only boasting of Freetown alone, but the country as a whole” Hon. Mansaray said stoutly.

He reasoned that “if we are able to help ten thousand youths get meaningful employment, we definitely will be boasting to have helped over 500,000 dependants and families all over the country.”

In 2010 alone, 776 people have been variously employed overseas, bringing in the much need remittances that has been a fundament part of the economy of the country according world bank assessment. “Each month, families and dependants come here to the Ministry of Labour to collect monies remitted to them, surviving from the employment of their sons, daughters, husbands and brothers abroad through the Employment Ministry,” Minkailu Mansaray said.
