How Poor Is Our Health Sector in Sierra Leone?
The biggest puzzle that still needs to be answered by our leaders is the ever inevitable question of our poor health system in the country. It is a very harsh reality that the country’s health sector is still fluctuating between the last and second to last health sector across the continent and the world at large. This situation is so because our leaders have still not taken the health of the ordinary man in Sierra Leone as a concern for them.
Every now and then, we hear about billions of dollars been invested in the country’s health sector by donor partners in a bid to strengthen our fragile health system. Whether these monies are been put into the right use still remains a puzzle as the country keeps retrogressing in terms of its health sector. The fragility of the health sector is evident in our leaders who themselves have no trust in a system they claim to have improved. Their distrust in the country’s health system is so alarming that even when they have a simple head ache, they fly to other countries for medical care because the system which they built is incompetent enough to handle that.
What then is the faith of the ordinary man in Sierra Leone who cannot afford to fly to other countries for medication? Could it mean that untimely death is the inevitable faith of the ordinary man in Sierra Leone who cannot afford to be treated abroad?
This medium is of the opinion that our leaders must try to make visible improvements in our health sector; improvements that will not only benefit the ordinary man but them the leaders as well. They should try to build a health system they can trust in terms of their medical checkups and medication instead of taking our meager resources to other countries all in the name of medical checkups and medication abroad.
We strongly believe that if all the monies used by our leaders abroad for treatment are invested in the country’s health sector, there would have been a massive improvement in this our fragile health system.
